Former Ship Hostel – George Place, Stonehouse, Plymouth

Heritage

The Challenge

This project involved the refurbishment of the existing hostel into eleven newly refurbished residential apartments, together with associated siteworks, drainage, services, paths, parking areas, fencing and landscaping.

Key Considerations

This was a challenging project (under a D&B Contract) involving the refurbishment/conversion of a former Victorian school building built in 1882, and previously used as a hostel, into 11 apartments. It was understood that the building was a non-designated heritage asset and this meant that externally, there was little scope for changes to building fabric.

The Outcome

This project was completed in May 2018.

Results

Further work has since been undertaken with the client on a number of other new build schemes. This project was one of a kind for the client and deemed as a window of opportunity for works in this area.
